Acupuncture is one of the many treatment methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is a distinctive feature of TCM. By inserting needles into specific acupuncture points, it stimulates the body’s meridians, thereby promoting the flow of Qi and blood, regulating the internal organs, and achieving the goal of treating diseases.
This treatment method has been widely accepted and praised, with an increasing number of people choosing acupuncture for their ailments. However, many may not be aware that there are various types of acupuncture, in addition to the commonly used filiform needles. So, what are the different types of acupuncture?1. Filiform NeedlesFiliform needles are the most commonly seen and used type in daily life. These needles are made of stainless steel, are very thin, and are heat-resistant. The length of the needles typically ranges from one to two inches. Short needles are usually used for areas with thinner skin, such as the head, face, and back of the hands and feet. Long needles are used for areas with thicker skin and muscle, such as the limbs and abdomen.
2. Three-edged NeedlesThree-edged needles have a relatively thick body and a triangular shape, with a sharp tip. They are typically used for puncturing specific acupuncture points to achieve therapeutic effects through bloodletting or to cut through local tissue to treat diseases. Although the idea of puncturing may sound intimidating, this method has shown significant results.3. Fire NeedlesFire needles involve heating filiform needles in a flame before insertion. Unlike regular filiform needles, the heated needles have a certain temperature, which enhances their ability to promote meridian flow and dispel cold. This method is particularly effective in treating cold and damp conditions.
4. Plum Blossom NeedlesPlum blossom needles consist of several small needles attached to one end of a handle. During treatment, the practitioner holds the other end of the handle and lightly taps the skin, causing local congestion and redness, at which point tapping can cease. Sometimes, this method is combined with cupping to promote bloodletting for better therapeutic effects.5. Needle KnifeThe needle knife is a less commonly used type of acupuncture treatment. Its needle body is much thicker than that of a filiform needle, and the tip is sharp, allowing it to cut and separate skin tissue and tendons. Many joint diseases, such as cervical spondylosis, can be treated initially with a needle knife.
