How to Take Traditional Chinese Medicine Pills?
Due to differences in preparation methods and effects, the way to take Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pills varies. Generally, TCM pills can be taken with boiled water, while some pills can be taken with other decoctions.
Pills for treating deficiency cold and wind-cold can be taken with ginger juice, such as Tong Xuan Li Fei Wan (Tong Xuan to Regulate the Lung Pill) and Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan (Fu Zi to Regulate the Middle Pill), as ginger can dispel wind and cold to enhance the efficacy of the medicine.
Alcohol can invigorate blood circulation and unblock meridians; therefore, for conditions such as qi and blood deficiency, qi stagnation and blood stasis, numbness of hands and feet, hemiplegia, and wind-cold damp bi syndrome, alcohol can be used to take the medicine, such as Huo Luo Wan (Invigorating Collaterals Pill).
Kidney qi tonics can be taken with light salt water, such as Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pill) and Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock to Secure Essence Pill), but it should be noted that patients with hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and edema should avoid taking medicine with salt water.
Pills that tonify qi and strengthen the spleen and stomach can be taken with rice soup, such as Ren Shen Jian Pi Wan (Ginseng to Strengthen the Spleen Pill), Zhi Zhu Wan (Atractylodes Pill), Ren Shen Gui Pi Wan (Ginseng to Return the Spleen Pill), and Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan (Platycladus to Nourish the Heart Pill).
Various medicines for dryness, such as Ma Ren Run Chang Wan (Hemp Seed to Moisten the Intestines Pill) and Wu Ren Run Chang Wan (Five Nut to Moisten the Intestines Pill), can be taken with honey.
