What is the origin of diseases?
1
As the saying goes, form arises from the heart
“Where the heart goes, the Qi follows; where the Qi goes, the form responds.” When visible symptoms appear at the level of form, it indicates that the issues of the heart and Qi have existed for a long time.

The unity of heaven and man
“Humans are endowed with the Qi of heaven and earth, and the laws of the four seasons are established.” The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) posits that the organs, meridians, Qi and blood, and all parts of the human body are interconnected with all things in nature, including time and space. Human life activities are influenced by the natural environment and rely on the nourishment of heaven and earth. The Qi of heaven and earth and the laws of the four seasons specifically refer to the Five Elements.

Yin-Yang and Five Elements, Varying by Individual
Different types of people, due to varying tendencies of the Five Elements, exhibit significant differences in both external physical characteristics and internal emotional responses;
The Five Elements act on the human body, with their Qi rising and falling differently, leading to five basic modes of thinking. The dominant element determines which mode of thinking prevails; this dominant element, with its unique characteristics, becomes the core of a person’s life, innate and unchanging, influencing health, disease, and many other aspects.
If the dominant element is balanced, the person is considered “balanced”; if the dominant element is unbalanced, issues may arise in one or more aspects of body, mind, or spirit.

What is Five-Element Acupuncture?
Five-element acupuncture originates from the Neijing, drawing nourishment from ancient Chinese philosophy—Yin-Yang and the Five Elements—to form a unique perspective of Eastern medicine. It is a classic school of acupuncture that centers on the Five Elements for diagnosis and treatment, addressing both body and mind, and represents a natural healing acupuncture school. Five-element acupuncture emphasizes sensation over logic, thus it has been passed down orally through generations and is not found in literature. It was introduced to the West in the mid-20th century, perfected by Professor Worsley from the UK, and spread in Europe and America, returning to its homeland in 2011.

Principles and Focus
Five-element acupuncture follows the system and principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, focusing on the individual rather than symptoms, identifying the patient’s “dominant element,” and selecting acupuncture points accordingly to stimulate self-healing from within.
Five-element acupuncture emphasizes the triad of body, mind, and spirit as the focus of acupuncture diagnosis and treatment, aligning with the modern biomedical—psychological—social model framework and meeting the modern medical demand for a holistic view of the human body.
