Lian Qiao (Forsythia) possesses the ability to elevate and disperse, promoting the circulation of Qi and blood, and is essential for treating blood stasis and Qi accumulation in the twelve meridians, making it a crucial herb for sores.
It can also release the exterior and resolve muscle tension, expelling toxins, making it a key herb for treating rashes and itching.
For treating exterior wind-heat, using 1 liang (approximately 30 grams) can induce sweating, and its sweating effect is gentle and prolonged, thus it is also a vital herb for wind-heat conditions.

In the treatment of sores in the twelve meridians, Lian Qiao cannot be omitted, as it embodies the principle of dispersing what is congealed. The formation of boils and sores is due to the obstruction of Ying Qi and the stagnation of Wei Qi, and Lian Qiao’s cooling properties eliminate stasis heat, while its fragrant and light nature disperses stagnation, thus allowing Ying and Wei to flow and the sores to dissipate.3Lian Qiao’s aroma is strong and its nature is cool, thus it can resolve any heat in the Qi level. It also has a slightly bitter and pungent taste, which helps to treat the toxic evils retained in the liver.4Lian Qiao is adept at regulating liver Qi, as it can both soothe the stagnation of liver Qi and pacify excessive liver Qi, effectively treating conditions caused by anger.5Lian Qiao’s cool nature and elevating properties make it effective for treating head and eye disorders. It can address headaches, eye pain, toothaches, nasal congestion, or runny nose leading to brain leakage.6Lian Qiao is used with Jing Jie to treat wind-heat; with Huang Qin and Huang Lian to treat fire heat; with Da Huang to treat dry heat; with Cang Zhu and Huang Bai to treat damp heat; with Dang Gui and Sheng Di to treat blood heat; with Bei Mu and Ban Xia to treat phlegm heat; with Shan Zhi to treat stagnant heat; with Gan Cao and Mai Dong to treat vexation heat; and with Jin Yin Hua and Zi Hua Di Ding to treat the heat of swollen sores.7When used with Niu Bang Zi, it has remarkable effects in treating sores.8For bitter mouth due to gallbladder heat stagnation, Lian Qiao combined with Chai Hu is particularly effective. It is also said to work well with Long Dan Cao. The author has verified that in clinical practice, patients complaining of bitter mouth, when treated with Lian Qiao (10-12 grams) and Long Dan Cao (6 grams) based on syndrome differentiation, have shown consistent improvement.9Lian Qiao is a sacred herb for clearing heat, effective for wind-heat exterior invasion, initial stages of warm diseases, and fevers in all seasons, especially effective for fevers in children, and has significant heat-clearing and detoxifying effects.
10Lian Qiao is highly effective in controlling respiratory tract inflammation; using 60 grams alone, decocted into a concentrated liquid, taken in divided doses over one day, for three consecutive days, is effective for acute bronchitis, tonsillitis, and acute laryngitis. When used with Jin Yin Hua, each at 30 grams, the method remains the same, and the efficacy is comparable.11For treating constipation, dried Lian Qiao can be cleaned and dried for use; each time use 15-30 grams, steeped in water or boiled as tea, taken continuously for 1-2 weeks, and can stop taking once bowel movements resume.12Lian Qiao can enhance capillary resistance, thus it is essential for treating thrombocytopenic purpura. The dosage should be around 30 grams for effectiveness.13Lian Qiao used alone (60-100 grams daily) or combined with Jin Yin Hua, Huang Qi, and Gan Cao, along with general Western medications to increase white blood cells, has shown good effects in increasing white blood cell counts.14For swollen lymph nodes in the neck or groin, Lian Qiao is quite effective; each time use 30 grams, combined with Xuan Shen and Xia Ku Cao (15 grams each), and Zhe Bei Mu (9 grams), taken as one dose every two days.15For treating anal abscess, use Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, and Zao Jiao Ci (15 grams each) decocted for oral administration, along with washing with the decoction externally, which is effective. If the abscess has not formed, it can be eliminated; if it has formed, it can be ruptured. This formula can also be used post-hemorrhoid surgery to prevent or alleviate complications such as anal pain and constipation.16In gynecological clinical practice, when Lian Qiao is appropriately combined, it can yield remarkable results. In summary, its uses can be categorized into three: First, it clears stagnant heat, cools the blood, and harmonizes the Ying to treat menstrual disorders. For treating excessive menstrual flow, metrorrhagia, and dysmenorrhea due to excess heat, Lian Qiao is often used with Si Wu Tang or Liang Di Tang. Second, it promotes the discharge of damp turbidity, clears heat, and detoxifies to treat leukorrhea. For treating damp-heat leukorrhea, Lian Qiao is often added to the formula based on syndrome differentiation, enhancing its ability to promote discharge, detoxify, and eliminate dampness. Third, it clears heart fire and unblocks the three jiaos to treat urinary issues. Compared to other damp-clearing and heat-clearing herbs, Lian Qiao is suitable for pregnant women or those with weak constitutions, as it can eliminate pathogens without harming the vital Qi. If it is due to Yin deficiency and heart fire excess, it is often used with Zhu Ling Tang; if it is due to liver meridian damp-heat, it is often used in larger doses (20 grams) with Chai Hu, Bai Shao, and Che Qian Cao, yielding significant results.17Combining Lian Qiao and Zi Cao in Xiao Yao San can effectively treat facial melasma caused by endocrine disorders, showing synergistic effects. Alternatively, adding Yi Mu Cao, Nu Zhen Zi, and Han Lian Cao can enhance the effect.18For treating vomiting milk, regardless of whether it is a purging or tonifying herb, Lian Qiao must be included. Historical texts do not mention treating vomiting milk, but when synthesizing various theories, this principle emerges.Lian Qiao is a herb for Shao Yang, Yang Ming, and Shao Yin, as vomiting is associated with inflammatory heat, thus it is used to drain heart fire, resolve liver and gallbladder heat, eliminate spleen and stomach damp-heat, and clear and relieve chest stagnation, thereby stopping the vomiting of milk.It is effective not only for children but also for adults experiencing vomiting and for pregnant women with morning sickness.
