Jian Qiao (Forsythia)

Flower

Jian Qiao, also known as Huanghua Gan (Yellow Flower Stem) or Huang Shou Dan (Yellow Longevity Dan), is named for its shape resembling ancient vehicles. It is native to China and widely distributed in Shaanxi, Henan, and Shanxi provinces. It is not only a precious traditional Chinese medicinal material but also a suitable ornamental tree.

Jian Qiao is a shrub of the Oleaceae family, with simple or trifoliate leaves that are ovate, broad ovate, or elliptical. The leaves are relatively large, with neat coarse serrations along the edges except at the base. Flowers usually grow singly or in clusters of 2 to several in the leaf axils, with green sepals and four petals. The fruit is oval or elongated oval; flowering occurs from March to April, and fruiting from July to September.

Jian Qiao has a graceful tree form and vigorous growth. It flowers before the leaves in early spring, with a long flowering period and abundant flowers, turning the branches golden yellow and fragrant when in full bloom, making it an excellent ornamental shrub for early spring.

The medicinal value of Jian Qiao was first recorded in the Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dispersing nodules, and is one of the commonly used traditional Chinese medicines in clinical practice, often used to treat acute wind-heat colds and lymph node tuberculosis. In daily life, Jian Qiao fruit is often combined with Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle) in medicinal preparations, such as “Wei C Yin Qiao Pian” and “Shuang Huang Lian Kou Fu Ye”.

Jian Qiao also belongs to wild oil plants, with seeds containing an oil content of 25%-33%. The seed oil contains gum and has good volatility, making it a good raw material for the insulation paint industry and cosmetics, with great development potential. The oil can be used to manufacture soap and cosmetics, as well as insulation paint and lubricants, and is rich in oleic acid and linoleic acid, which are easily absorbed and digested by the human body. The oil has a fragrant taste and, after refining, is a good cooking oil.

Jian Qiao extract can be used as a natural preservative for food preservation, especially suitable for preserving fresh fish products with high moisture content. Jian Qiao extract effectively inhibits the proliferation of common spoilage bacteria in the environment, extending the shelf life of food, making it a promising, low-cost, and safe new type of food preservative.
