▍Can Moxibustion Be Done Daily?
Yes.
For many people, maintaining a normal life and work routine leads to a state where the consumption of Qi (气) and Blood (血) exceeds their replenishment. Over time, this can result in deficiency. The best approach is not to wait until a serious illness develops but to perform daily moxibustion to maintain the body’s health. No session of moxibustion is wasted; this is not an exaggeration.
For those already experiencing discomfort or occasional wind-cold symptoms, daily moxibustion can help the body recover quickly, preventing minor ailments from lingering and potentially leading to more serious conditions.
For individuals with chronic conditions who have not seen significant improvement despite various treatments and care, moxibustion may be their last hope. Moxibustion can address numerous ailments, especially chronic conditions; the gentle warmth of moxa can unblock the twelve meridians and alleviate three Yin diseases. For these individuals, daily moxibustion may not be sufficient, and multiple areas may need to be treated simultaneously for rapid results.
▍Will Daily Moxibustion Deplete Qi and Blood?
Not necessarily.
Before answering this question, one must ask: Are we performing moxibustion or grilling meat? If the moxibustion site is burning, it is akin to grilling meat. If it is not burning, then it is true moxibustion.
If it resembles grilling meat, it first injures the body fluids (redness and sweating at the moxibustion site, dry mouth and throat after treatment), which can subsequently harm Qi and Blood. The medical sage Zhang Zhongjing warned: (grilling meat) “Even with mild heat, internal damage can be severe, burning bones and injuring tendons, making it difficult for blood to recover.”
To avoid hidden depletion of Qi, it is crucial to avoid grilling and to use the correct method for moxibustion.
Moxibustion is warm like the gentle sun in winter, akin to a mother’s love—warm but not harsh, making it easy for the body to absorb and quickly transform into Qi within the body. The meridians carry the body’s righteous Qi, thus avoiding feelings of discomfort or heat. If a metal plate is used as a heat source, the sensation is intense and erratic, but afterward, the meridians may be injured, requiring additional Qi and Blood for repair, leading to feelings of inexplicable irritability followed by fatigue.
