The “Huangdi Neijing” (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) in the “Suwen Tongping Xushi Lun” states: When pathogenic qi is strong, it leads to excess (shi), and when vital qi is depleted, it leads to deficiency (xu). Excess should be drained, and deficiency should be tonified. This may be the earliest discussion of “supporting the righteous (fu zheng) and expelling pathogens (qu xie).” The concept of “supporting the righteous and expelling pathogens” is a brilliant gem in our great treasure trove of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The discussion of “supporting the righteous and expelling pathogens” has penetrated deeply into the populace, almost becoming a daily idiom.
The concept of supporting the righteous and expelling pathogens is also well reflected in the clinical practice of floating needle therapy.
How does floating needle therapy “support the righteous”? The health of any tissue in the human body requires blood to maintain it; without blood, tissues will immediately encounter problems. This is because blood has the following functions:
As we know, the effectiveness of floating needle therapy is due to its ability to relax the tense muscles in the affected area, thereby relieving the pressure on the blood vessels that run through them, which changes the ischemic state of the area supplied by those vessels. Blood contains a large amount of hemoglobin and nutrients, allowing local tissues to undergo normal metabolism and maintain vigorous vitality.
With the support of the righteous, we can expel pathogens. The expulsion of pathogens can manifest in at least three aspects:
A. Normal local blood circulation can prevent the area from being sensitive to cold and wind; it also alleviates discomfort, pain, and limited movement caused by cold weather or wind exposure.
B. The blood not only contains hemoglobin and nutrients but also a large number of white blood cells and other non-specific immune cells that can combat the small amounts of bacteria, viruses, and their metabolic products present in the local microcirculation.
C. Blood entering local tissues helps maintain their good condition, allowing phagocytic cells and monocytes in the area to better perform their phagocytic and endocytic functions.
Therefore, by supplying blood to ischemic local tissues, floating needle therapy can support the righteous while also expelling pathogens.
However, it should be noted that in cases of obvious infection, simply increasing blood volume without the aid of antibiotics is often insufficient. For general inflammation and tissue repair, floating needle therapy can support the righteous and expel pathogens. However, in severe infections, external assistance—antibiotics—may be necessary.
