Mr. Chen has suffered from dry eyes, photophobia, and tearing for many years, with recurrent episodes. Due to long-term consumption of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoctions, he has poor appetite. On July 21, he visited the municipal TCM hospital for treatment. After various examinations and considering Mr. Chen’s actual condition, the doctor diagnosed and treated him accordingly, recommending the “Traditional Chinese Medicine Prescription Pill – Zi Shen Zeng Guang Wan (Kidney Nourishing and Vision Enhancing Pill)”. Now, half a month has passed, and Mr. Chen reported: “The pill has changed my perception of TCM; it tastes good, is easy to carry, and most importantly, I don’t have to brew the medicine myself every day. It’s really convenient!”
In recent years,
the TCM pharmacy of the municipal hospital has summarized and analyzed
the various concerns of patients regarding
the consumption of TCM.
Most patients believe that
the large quantity and bitter taste of TCM
are truly distressing for many
“bitter-phobic” individuals.
Therefore, to better serve the citizens and meet the personalized needs of different patients, after extensive preparatory work, we have finally launched a diversified TCM prescription processing service!
What TCM prescription processing services are currently offered at our hospital?
Pills, concentrated decoctions, seasonal paste formulas, sachets, powders, and external ointments.
01
Pills
Pills are prescriptions written by the doctor after diagnosing and treating the patient, processed into pill form using traditional techniques. Pills have the advantages of good taste, high drug content, and ease of storage and transport, significantly enhancing the patient’s medication experience. They are suitable for chronic disease patients who require long-term medication.
02
Concentrated Decoctions
Concentrated decoctions are liquid forms concentrated from TCM decoctions. Compared to traditional decoctions, they are absorbed quickly, act rapidly, require smaller doses, have a more acceptable taste, and come in single-dose packaging, making them stable in efficacy and convenient for storage and consumption. They meet the special needs of children, busy professionals, and the elderly who have difficulty taking medicine.
03
Seasonal Paste Formulas
Paste formulas are no longer a “winter exclusive”; suitable paste formulas can be chosen throughout the year. Seasonal paste formulas are prescriptions written by TCM practitioners based on the TCM theory of spring growth, summer flourishing, autumn harvest, and winter storage, as well as individual constitution and needs. After concentrated decoction, they are mixed with certain excipients to form a thick semi-liquid or gel-like form, characterized by gentle nourishment and better taste. Seasonal paste formulas are more suitable for patients with deficiency or internal excess pathogens, achieving the goals of tonifying deficiency or expelling pathogens.
04
Sachets
Sachets originate from the “clothing and cap therapy” in TCM, utilizing clothing, hats, shoes, or accessories to carry medicine on the body, allowing absorption through the respiratory tract or skin to exert its disease prevention and treatment effects. For example, mosquito-repelling sachets have the effect of repelling mosquitoes and insects; anti-cold sachets have the effect of purifying and eliminating filth. The choice of sachets also varies by individual and should be selected based on TCM diagnosis and treatment principles. However, caution is advised for infants under two years old, asthma patients, pregnant women, and those with allergic constitutions when wearing sachets.
05
Powders
Powders are made by grinding one or more herbs into a uniform dry powder. External powders can be applied or sprinkled on affected areas, such as the Si Huang San commonly used in orthopedics. Oral powders are generally dissolved in liquids for consumption or can be taken directly with water, such as San Qi powder or amber powder. Powders are characterized by easy dispersion, rapid action, simple preparation, and convenience for storage and transport.
06
External Ointments
External ointments are made from suitable bases and herbs, using appropriate techniques to create semi-solid or solid medications for external use. External ointments are administered through the skin, avoiding the first-pass effect in the liver and reducing the side effects of the medication.
Our surgical department has deeply explored classical prescriptions and empirical formulas, using intangible cultural heritage techniques to produce external ointments – “Zi Cao Di Yu Gao (Lithospermum and Sanguisorba Ointment)”. It has the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling, stopping bleeding, and moistening dryness to relieve pain. “Zi Cao Di Yu Gao” is made entirely from herbal ingredients, with no additives. A special note: this ointment is particularly effective for burns and scalds.
