Hello everyone, I am Qiangzi. When we say a person is physically weak, we often mean they lack strength, have poor complexion, are prone to illness, or we might think of men’s kidney deficiency. However, in daily life, we often hear the term “Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency” (Pi Wei Xu Han). Doctors or health practitioners may advise you to eat less cold food, seafood, and spicy foods, etc. It feels like if one has Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency, it becomes more serious. In fact, it cannot be said that “Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency” is severe; it simply means that these two organs are difficult to regulate and are often overlooked. The causes of deficiency are numerous, and the symptoms are not obvious.
1. Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency
When we refer to Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency, we usually mean Spleen Qi Deficiency (Pi Qi Xu), Spleen Yang Deficiency (Pi Yang Xu), and Stomach Yang Deficiency (Wei Yang Xu).
Spleen Qi Deficiency manifests as: abdominal distension, especially after eating, lack of taste, even loss of appetite, loose stools, fatigue, emaciation, limb weakness, shortness of breath, pale or sallow complexion, possible edema, pale tongue with white coating, and weak pulse.
When it manifests as Spleen Yang Deficiency, symptoms include: abdominal distension with reduced appetite, dull abdominal pain, preference for warmth and pressure, cold limbs, and loose, watery stools. There may also be heaviness in the limbs, possible edema, difficulty urinating, or excessive thin white discharge. The tongue is pale and swollen with a white, slippery coating, and the pulse is deep, slow, and weak.
The symptoms of Stomach Yang Deficiency are most notably frequent stomach acid, stomach pain, acid reflux, lack of appetite, and worsening symptoms after exposure to cold.
2. Causes of Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency:
The main cause of Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency is poor dietary habits, such as frequently consuming raw, cold, or hard foods. For example, during winter, many parents take their children out and buy ice cream, leading to stomach pain and loss of appetite later. In summer, few people eat hot foods; most prefer cold dishes, cold noodles, and chilled fruit drinks. Children are particularly susceptible to Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency, so care must be taken. Additionally, many young people have irregular eating habits, skipping breakfast, eating takeout for lunch, and binge eating at night. Over time, this will definitely harm the Spleen and Stomach. Many people take stomach medications without paying attention to their diet, which is absolutely not advisable.
3. How to Regulate Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency
Regulating the Spleen and Stomach is a matter of habit; it cannot be fixed by just taking supplements or medications for a few days. Below are some methods that friends can try and incorporate into their routine:
1. Ginger Milk Drink
Fresh ginger and fresh milk. Wash and peel the ginger, slice it, and extract the juice. Add it to milk and simmer until boiling. Drink one cup in the morning and one in the afternoon; it has warming and tonifying effects on the Spleen and Stomach.
2. Ginger Porridge
Slice ginger, add 5 jujubes (Da Zao), and glutinous rice to cook into porridge. Eat one bowl daily; it warms the Spleen, nourishes the Stomach, dispels wind, and alleviates cold, especially suitable for elderly individuals with Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency.
3. Herbal Formulas: Six Gentlemen Decoction (Liu Jun Zi Tang) and Ren Shen Ling (Shen Ling Bai Zhu San) can be brewed and consumed for regulation.
4. Eating more fennel, such as fennel chicken buns or dumplings, is also beneficial.
People with Spleen and Stomach Yang Deficiency are very sensitive to cold. For instance, during summer, it is not advisable to stay in air conditioning for long periods. Moderate exercise to induce sweating and drinking warm water is beneficial. As the saying goes, health preservation is about developing good habits and a healthy lifestyle, in harmony with the seasons.
That’s all for today, see you tomorrow!
