In the theoretical system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the health status of the human body is closely related to the balance of Qi (气), Blood (血), Yin (阴), and Yang (阳). Once there is a deficiency in Qi, Blood, Yin, or Yang, various discomfort symptoms may arise.
1. Qi Deficiency Leading to Dampness
The normal metabolism of body fluids relies on the propulsion of Qi (气). When there is Qi deficiency (气虚), the propulsion is weak, leading to stagnation of fluids and the formation of dampness. Symptoms include general fatigue, lack of activity, and heaviness in the limbs. Additionally, there may be chest tightness, nausea, poor appetite, and abdominal bloating with indigestion.
The tongue presentation shows a swollen tongue with tooth marks, and a thick or watery coating. At this time, Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (参苓白术散) can be used for adjustment.
2. Blood Deficiency Leading to Wind
Blood primarily serves to nourish and moisten the body. If there is Blood deficiency (血虚) and it cannot provide adequate nutrition, internal wind may arise. Symptoms may include numbness or tremors in the muscles and tendons, or twitching; the skin may itch or flake. Such individuals are also prone to dizziness, insomnia with vivid dreams, and pale complexion and nails.
The tongue presentation shows a pale tongue with a white coating. Ren Shen Yang Rong Wan (人参养荣丸) can be used to improve this condition.
3. Yang Deficiency Leading to Cold
Yang (阳) has the functions of warming, promoting, and defending. Individuals with Yang deficiency (阳虚) are prone to cold symptoms. This may manifest as a fear of cold, cold hands and feet, cold pain in the lower back and knees, general lethargy, frequent urination, and low resistance, making them susceptible to illness.
The tongue presentation shows a pale tongue with a white coating. Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (桂附地黄丸) can be selected for adjustment.
4. Yin Deficiency Leading to Excess Heat
Yin (阴) primarily functions to calm and moisten. Individuals with Yin deficiency (阴虚) have insufficient body fluids and excess internal heat, often feeling thirsty, experiencing body heat, irritability, insomnia, night sweats, dizziness, and tinnitus.
The tongue presentation shows a red tongue with little coating. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (六味地黄丸) can alleviate symptoms.
Through precise understanding of Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang, TCM can effectively regulate these four major deficiencies, helping individuals restore balance and health.
