(3) Supporting the Right Qi and Expelling Evil Qi

Supporting the Right Qi (扶正, fuzheng) refers to the method of tonification, used for deficiency syndromes; expelling Evil Qi (祛邪, quxie) refers to the method of purging, used for excess syndromes. The process of disease can, in a sense, be described as a struggle between the Right Qi and Evil Qi. If Evil Qi prevails over the Right Qi, the disease progresses; if the Right Qi prevails over the Evil Qi, the disease recedes. Therefore, supporting the Right Qi and expelling Evil Qi involves altering the balance of power between the two, favoring the transformation of the disease towards recovery. The tonification methods used to support the Right Qi include benefiting Qi, nourishing blood, enriching Yin, and assisting Yang. The purging methods used to expel Evil Qi include dispersing, purging downward, draining dampness, promoting urination, resolving stagnation, and transforming stasis. Supporting the Right Qi and expelling Evil Qi are complementary to each other. Supporting the Right Qi strengthens the Right Qi, helping to resist pathogenic factors; while expelling Evil Qi eliminates the invasion of pathogenic factors, which is beneficial for preserving and restoring the Right Qi. Generally, supporting the Right Qi is suitable for conditions of deficiency of the Right Qi with no significant presence of Evil Qi; while expelling Evil Qi is suitable for conditions of excess Evil Qi with no significant deficiency of the Right Qi. When both supporting the Right Qi and expelling Evil Qi are employed simultaneously, it is important to clarify whether the primary issue is deficiency of the Right Qi or excess of Evil Qi. If the deficiency of the Right Qi is more urgent, the focus should be on supporting the Right Qi while also considering expelling Evil Qi; if the excess of Evil Qi is more urgent, the focus should be on expelling Evil Qi while also supporting the Right Qi. If the deficiency of the Right Qi is predominant and the Right Qi is too weak to withstand attack, then it is advisable to first support the Right Qi before expelling Evil Qi; if the Evil Qi is excessive but the Right Qi is not significantly deficient, or even if both are present, if supporting the Right Qi would further assist the Evil Qi, then it is better to first expel Evil Qi before supporting the Right Qi. In summary, the principle should be to support the Right Qi without leaving behind Evil Qi, and to expel Evil Qi without harming the Right Qi.
