What is Yin Excess and Yang Deficiency Constitution? What are the Symptoms?

We often hear the term “Yin Excess and Yang Deficiency”. When used to describe a person’s body, it can also be referred to as “Yin Excess and Yang Deficiency”. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that the best condition is the harmony of Yin and Yang, but some individuals have a constitution characterized by Yin Excess and Yang Deficiency. TCM has always expressed this in a way that seems profound. So, what are the causes of this constitution? What symptoms are associated with it?

Yin and Yang Deficiency Constitution Diseases:

1. Cold intolerance and cold extremities. This is a key symptom of Yang deficiency. Qi and blood are like the sunlight of nature; if Yang Qi is insufficient, the extracellular fluid in the body will be in a state of “severe cold”.

2. Diarrhea with undigested food. This refers to stools containing undigested food. If we compare the stomach to a pot cooking ingredients, then the Qi and blood are like the fire; with insufficient Yang Qi, the food ingested cannot be thoroughly digested and absorbed.

3. Lack of energy. Insufficient Yang Qi leads to a decrease in the life activities of body cells, primarily manifesting as depression and lethargy.

4. A tongue that is pale and swollen, or has indentations from the teeth. The consumption and metabolism of water in the body depend on the plant respiration of Qi and blood. If Qi and blood are weak, insufficient evaporation of moisture will lead to the accumulation of unnecessary fluids in the body, resulting in a swollen tongue. A swollen tongue with indentations is a typical tongue manifestation of Yang deficiency.

5. Individuals with Yang deficiency often experience frequent urination at night, bedwetting, and unclear urination.

6. Yang deficiency is generally related to a lack of kidney Yang essence. Therefore, individuals with Yang deficiency may have low libido, cold sensations in the body, or experience pain in the heels, waist, and legs, and are very prone to lower limb swelling.

7. In women, Yang deficiency can lead to cold dysmenorrhea, scanty menstruation, amenorrhea, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and other diseases, resulting in infertility, miscarriage, or premature birth.

The above are some external symptoms of Yin Excess and Yang Deficiency. If you have such symptoms, it indicates that you may have this constitution. You can usually adjust your condition through dietary therapy, such as eating more Yang-tonifying foods like beef and chicken breast. You can also soak your feet in warm water every night and engage in aerobic exercise to help alleviate this condition.
