Honeysuckle, also known as Rén Dōng (学名:Lonicera japonica). The name “Honeysuckle” comes from the Compendium of Materia Medica (本草纲目), as the flowers of honeysuckle initially bloom white and later turn yellow, hence the name. The medicinal material honeysuckle consists of the dried flower buds or freshly opened flowers of the honeysuckle plant from the Caprifoliaceae family.

Honeysuckle has been praised since ancient times as an excellent medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying. It is sweet and cold in nature, aromatic, and clears heat without harming the stomach, while its fragrance can dispel evil. Honeysuckle can disperse wind-heat and effectively clear blood toxins, making it useful for various febrile diseases such as fever, rashes, spots, heat toxins, and sore throat.

Available honeysuckle preparations include “Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian”, “Yin Qiao Pian”, and “Yin Huang Injection”. “Honeysuckle syrup” is an aromatic volatile oil and water-soluble extract obtained from honeysuckle through distillation, which is an excellent product for clearing heat and detoxifying, treating conditions like infantile fetal toxins, sores, and fever-induced thirst. In summer, it can be used as a tea substitute to treat warm heat rashes and bloody dysentery. The stems and vines, known as “Rén Dōng Téng”, are also used medicinally. The effective components of honeysuckle are chlorogenic acid and isochlorogenic acid, which are secondary metabolites produced during the plant’s metabolic processes. Their content not only depends on the plant species but can also be significantly influenced by ecological and geographical conditions, as well as phenological periods.

Honeysuckle tea has unique weight loss functions and can inhibit and kill pathogenic bacteria in the throat, providing anti-infection benefits for the elderly and children. Regular consumption of honeysuckle infusion or decoction is beneficial for treating and recovering from conditions such as wind-heat eye redness, sore throat, obesity, liver heat syndrome, and liver heat type hypertension.
