Distinguishing between Wind-Cold (Feng Han) and Wind-Heat (Feng Re) colds is as follows:
First, Wind-Cold colds are primarily caused by the invasion of cold pathogens, while Wind-Heat colds are caused by heat pathogens. Generally, during the winter and autumn, it is easier to be affected by Wind-Cold pathogens, whereas in the summer, Wind-Heat colds are more common. There are differences in the seasons of onset and the nature of the diseases.
Second, regarding the color of phlegm, Wind-Cold colds typically produce thin, white phlegm, while Wind-Heat colds produce thick, yellow phlegm, which can be used for differentiation.
Third, in terms of nasal discharge, those with Wind-Cold colds usually have clear nasal discharge, while if the discharge is slightly yellow, it may indicate a Wind-Heat cold.
Fourth, check if the mouth is dry. Generally, when affected by Wind-Cold, the mouth is not dry, but if it is Wind-Heat, the heat damages body fluids, leading to dry mouth and thirst.
Fifth, patients with Wind-Cold colds usually do not experience much throat pain, only a dry cough, and the throat is not particularly red or swollen. In contrast, those with Wind-Heat colds have a throat that is quite red and swollen, indicating a Wind-Heat cold, and they experience more throat pain.
Sixth, patients with Wind-Cold colds have a solid constitution with closed pores and do not sweat, while those with Wind-Heat colds will sweat profusely, indicating that the body is very hot.
Seventh, there are significant differences in gastrointestinal symptoms; those with Wind-Cold colds often experience severe abdominal pain, while those with Wind-Heat colds do not have obvious symptoms, including fever.
Eighth, the body temperature of patients with Wind-Cold colds generally does not exceed 38°C, while those with Wind-Heat colds have a much higher body temperature.
