Traditional Chinese medicine decoctions generally have strong medicinal properties and rapid efficacy, but they also have drawbacks such as large volumes and bitter tastes that are inconvenient for children to take. If we switch to powder formulations, they can be effective in treating common pediatric diseases such as diarrhea, exogenous high fever, cough, and food accumulation. Powder formulations have advantages such as small dosage, low cost, no need for decoction, and saving on medicinal materials. Here are some commonly used herbal powders:
(1) Qing Re San (Clear Heat Powder)
Function: Clears heat and dispels summer heat, calms the mind and settles fright.
Indications: Irritability due to summer heat, convulsions, dizziness, nausea.
Composition: Amber (Hu Po), Uncaria (Gou Teng), Amomum (Zi Kou Ren) each 50g, Talcum (Hua Shi), Licorice (Gan Cao) each 150g, Menthol (Bo He) 10g, Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) 80g, Persimmon Powder (Shi Zi Shuang) 100g.
(2) Xuan Fei San (Disperse Lung Powder)
Function: Disperses the lungs and stops cough, releases the exterior with warm acrid.
Indications: Wind-cold common cold, fever with profuse sweating, headache with chills, cough with runny nose.
Composition: Schizonepeta (Jing Jie Sui), Apricot Kernel (Xing Ren) each 120g, Perilla Leaf (Su Ye) 50g, Hawthorn (Shan Zha), Fermented Barley (Shen Qu), Roasted Barley (Chao Mai Ya) each 30g, Ephedra (Ma Huang) 15g, Senna Leaf (Fan Xie Ye) 1.5g, Peppermint (Bo He) 120g.
(3) Qing Fei San (Clear Lung Powder)
Function: Clears heat and disperses the lungs, transforms phlegm and stops cough.
Indications: Fever from pneumonia, phlegm rattling in the throat, cough with wheezing, nasal irritation.

(4) Dun Ke San (Sudden Cough Powder)
Function: Disperses the lungs, transforms phlegm, and calms cough.
Indications: Wind-cold cough, worse during the day and better at night, whooping cough (cough with cold symptoms).
Composition: Coltsfoot Flower (Kuan Dong Hua), Plantago Seed (Che Qian Zi), Aster (Zi Wan), White Mustard (Bai Bu), White Front (Bai Qian), Radix Peucedani (Qian Hu) in equal parts.
(5) Ting Li Zi San (Ting Li Powder)
Indications: Cough due to lung heat, hot phlegm, asthma, whooping cough (heat type), tonsillitis, lymphadenitis.
Composition: Sweet Fried Ting Li Zi, Fritillaria (Chuan Bei) each 100g, Silkworm (Jiang Chong), Belamcanda (She Gan), Licorice (Gan Cao) each 50g.
(6) Xiao Er Zhi Ke San (Children’s Cough Powder)
Function: Moistens the lungs, transforms phlegm, stops cough, and calms wheezing.
Indications: Wind-cold cough, excessive thin phlegm, wheezing, phlegm rattling, chronic cough, lung qi deficiency with hiccups.

Indications: Cough due to deficiency-cold, clear thin phlegm, accompanied by nausea, lung and spleen deficiency, chronic cough.
Composition: Ginkgo Nut (Bai Guo) 200g, Fennel (Xiao Hui Xiang), Apricot Kernel (Xing Ren) each 200g, Ephedra (Ma Huang) 100g.
(8) Da Yuan San (Great Source Powder)
Composition: Kudzu Root (Ge Gen), Bupleurum (Chai Hu), Scutellaria (Huang Qin), Magnolia Bark (Hou Po), Areca Nut (Ping Lang), Grass Fruit (Cao Guo) each 9g, Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren) 20g, Senna Leaf (Fan Xie Ye) 1.2g.
Function: Clears heat, releases the muscles, strengthens the spleen, and eliminates dampness.
Indications: Fever, spontaneous sweating, tidal fever in the day, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, red tongue with yellow greasy coating.
Combinations: 1. Xuan Xiao San for treating external cold with internal heat common cold. 2. Qing Re Jie Du San for treating wind-heat common cold. 3. Zhi Li San combined with Xiang Lian San for treating acute bacterial dysentery. 7. Bai Zhu San combined with Yi Yuan San for treating spleen deficiency diarrhea.
(9) Xuan Xiao San (Disperse and Eliminate Powder)
Composition: Ephedra (Ma Huang) 6g, Apricot Kernel (Xing Ren), Schizonepeta (Jing Jie Sui), Perilla Leaf (Zi Su Ye), Peppermint (Bo He), Jiao San Xian each 9g, Senna Leaf (Fan Xie Ye) 1.2g.
Function: Disperses exterior cold, eliminates food stagnation, induces sweating, reduces fever, disperses the lungs, and stops cough.
Indications: Wind-cold common cold, early stage of measles.
Note: Drink plenty of water during medication, avoid use in those who sweat, and use less than Da Yuan San.
(10) Tui Re Ling (Reduce Fever Spirit)
Composition: White Rhinoceros Horn (Bai Xi Jiao), Coptis (Chuan Lian), Gardenia (Zhi Zi), Talcum (Hua Shi) in equal parts.
Function: Clears heat, drains fire, cools blood, detoxifies, calms fright, and stops wind.
Indications: High fever, delirium, convulsions.
(11) Qing Re San (Clear Heat Powder)
Composition: Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) 24g, Amber (Hu Po), Uncaria (Gou Teng) each 15g, Menthol (Bo He) 1.5g, Talcum (Hua Shi) 60g, Licorice (Gan Cao) 45g, Old Cardamom (Lao Kou Ren) 15g, Persimmon Powder (Shi Zi Shuang) 30g.
Function: Clears heat, relieves irritability, harmonizes the stomach, and benefits dampness.
Indications: Fever with convulsions, irritability, restlessness, night terrors, vomiting, diarrhea.
This powder should not be decocted due to the presence of cinnabar.
Combinations: Qing Re San combined with Ding Feng San for treating 1. convulsions of unknown origin 2. convulsions caused by central nervous system infections and toxic encephalopathy.
(12) Gan Ji San (Food Accumulation Powder)
Composition: Prepared Turtle Shell (Zhi Bie Jia), Pao Shan Jia, Fried Chicken Inner Gold (Chao Ji Nei Jin), Fried Areca Nut (Chao Bing Lang), Torreya Seed (Fei Zi Ren) each 15g, Cardamom (Sha Ren), Jiao San Xian each 6g, Senna Leaf (Fan Xie Ye) 1.5g.
Function: Strengthens the spleen, opens the appetite, relaxes the chest, regulates qi, transforms food accumulation, harmonizes the stomach, stops diarrhea, nourishes yin, and subdues yang.
Indications: Poor appetite, sallow complexion, fatigue, indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal distension.
Note: 1. Avoid greasy foods during medication.
2. Large doses can break accumulation and cause diarrhea, moderate doses assist digestion, while small doses can stop diarrhea.
Combinations: 1. Qing Re San for treating pediatric food accumulation with fever. 2. Combined with Xuan Xiao San for treating external cold diarrhea with wind-cold. 3. Combined with Da Yuan San for treating external cold diarrhea with wind-heat. 4. Combined with Xiao Dao San (10:2) for treating food injury diarrhea.
5. Combined with Bai Zhu San for treating spleen deficiency with stagnation and diarrhea.
6. Combined with Li Zhong San + Bai Zhu San for treating diarrhea due to both spleen and kidney deficiency.
7. Gan Ji San + Bai Zhu San + Placenta Powder for treating food accumulation, anemia, weakness, and delayed development.
8. Gan Ji San + Placenta Powder + Cordyceps for treating chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.
(13) Xiao Gan San (Digestive Powder)

Function: Strengthens the spleen, promotes digestion, drains dampness, and stops diarrhea.
Indications: Diarrhea due to spleen deficiency.
(17) Cang Ling San (Cang Ling Powder)
Composition: Fried Atractylodes (Chao Bai Zhu) 100g, Poria (Fu Ling), Honeysuckle (Jin Yin Hua) each 150g.
Function: Strengthens the spleen, clears heat, and drains dampness.
Indications: Damp-heat obstructing the spleen, green stools, watery stools with little residue, burning sensation at the anus, slight fever, nausea.
(18) Zhi Li San (Stop Dysentery Powder)
Composition: Wood Fragrance (Mu Xiang) 45g, Coptis (Huang Lian) 6g, Fried Atractylodes (Chao Bai Zhu) 9g, Rhubarb (Da Huang) 2g.
Function: Clears heat, dries dampness, detoxifies, harmonizes the stomach, and regulates qi to relieve pain.
Indications: Fever, vomiting, diarrhea with pus and blood, abdominal pain.
Combinations: 1. Zhi Li San + Da Yuan San in equal parts for treating bacterial dysentery with fever.
2. Zhi Li San + Yi Yuan San or Liu Yi San in equal parts for treating diarrhea with pus and blood.
(19) Liu Yi San (Six One Powder)
Composition: Talcum (Hua Shi) 18g, Licorice (Gan Cao) 3g.
Function: Clears summer heat and drains dampness.
Indications: Exposure to summer heat, body heat, irritability, thirst, difficulty urinating, vomiting, diarrhea, dysuria.
Appendix: Yi Yuan San: Liu Yi San plus 3g of Cinnabar. Function same as Liu Yi San, with added calming and tranquilizing effects.
(20) Li Zhong San (Regulate the Middle Powder)
Function: Warms the middle, disperses cold, tonifies qi, strengthens the spleen, and stops diarrhea.
Composition: Codonopsis (Dang Shen), Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang), Licorice (Gan Cao).
Indications: Diarrhea due to spleen yang deficiency, no thirst, vomiting, abdominal pain, fullness, and lack of appetite, chronic convulsions.
(21) Abdominal Pain Powder No. 1
Composition: Piper Longum (Bi Bo), Lindera (Wu Yao), Corydalis (Yuan Hu), Fennel (Xiao Hui Xiang) in equal parts.
Function: Regulates qi, relieves pain, warms the middle, and disperses cold.
Indications: Abdominal pain caused by cold.
Note: If abdominal pain, fever, dry mouth, and constipation are present, avoid use. During medication, avoid raw, cold, greasy, or hard-to-digest foods.
(22) Abdominal Pain Powder No. 2
Composition: White Peony (Bai Shao), Licorice (Gan Cao) in equal parts.
Function: Nourishes the liver, harmonizes the middle, and relieves acute pain.
Indications: Abdominal pain with cramping, thirst, and fullness in the chest and flanks.
(23) He Gan San (Harmonize Liver Powder)
Composition: Trichosanthes (Gua Lou) 60g, Turmeric (Jiang Huang) 15g, Curcuma (Yu Jin), Shen Qu, Licorice (Gan Cao) each 15g.
Function: Harmonizes the liver, strengthens the spleen, relieves distension, and alleviates pain.
Indications: Liver enlargement, abdominal distension and pain, loss of appetite, nausea.
(24) Bai Kou San (White Cardamom Powder)
Composition: White Cardamom Seed (Bai Kou Ren) 30g, Cardamom (Sha Ren) 20g, Green Peel (Qing Pi), Dried Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), Cyperus (Xiang Fu), Curcuma (E Zhu) each 9g.
Function: Regulates qi, relieves pain, harmonizes the stomach, descends rebellious qi, transforms food stagnation.
Indications: Poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension and pain.
(25) Han Ke San (Cold Cough Powder)

Three days ago had a history of food injury, this is food accumulation fever, thick yellow greasy coating indicates no meat consumption. “No coating on the tongue, no food in the stomach.” Should drink plenty of water, avoid beverages. Prescription: Tui Re Ling three bottles. Da Yuan San 45g, Shao Gan San 15g, Xiao Dao San 15g, divided into nine doses, also use Antelope Horn Powder 12g. Each dose 6g, decoct in water, three times a day.
Case 2: Pediatric fingerprint, right indicates spleen and stomach, left indicates liver and gallbladder, is a diagnostic method for children under three years old. Floating and sinking indicate exterior and interior, red and purple distinguish cold and heat, pale and stagnant determine deficiency and excess, three gates determine severity. Length not exceeding one inch, width not exceeding half an inch. Wind gate is light, qi gate is heavy, passing the qi gate is fatal. Case 6: Eight years old, recurrent high fever, easy sweating, spontaneous sweating, nasal congestion with clear discharge, hungry but not eating much, signs of fright. Prescription: Da Yuan San 45g, Qing Re San 20g, Yi Yuan San 10g, 3*3. Frosted mulberry leaves 40g, decoct in water. Re-examination: Easy sweating, abdominal distension, runny nose, prescription: White Cardamom 90g, Yu Ping Feng San 50g, Yi Yuan San 10g, 3*6. Case 9: Wind cold without nasal discharge, wind cold with nasal discharge. Yellow coating indicates heat, white coating indicates cold. Moist tongue indicates cold, dry tongue indicates heat. Clear nasal discharge indicates cold. Wind injures the defensive qi, cold injures the nutritive qi. Nutritive qi flows in the vessels, defensive qi flows outside the vessels.
