After the Cold Dew (Han Lu) period, the west wind brings cold, and the temperature drops, already feeling the chill of early winter! Many people have put on thermal pants and covered themselves with thick blankets.

With a little carelessness, if you catch a bit of cold wind, you may notice slight nasal congestion, clear runny nose, sneezing, feeling a bit cold, headache, and a general sense of body ache and fatigue. Undoubtedly, this is a case of wind-cold invasion.

Among the six excess pathogenic factors, the most easily felt is wind evil, “wind is the chief of all diseases”; cold evil belongs to yin evils, which stagnate and draw in.The combination of wind and cold evils invades, causing the body’s pores to close and lung defense to become unbalanced, leading to a cold.

If your cold symptoms are relatively mild, just a bit of clear runny nose and sneezing, we can first try this simple regulating formula “Scallion and Fermented Soybean Soup”

🔶 Ingredients20g scallion white (Allium fistulosum), 10g fermented soybean (Dou Chi), 3 slices of ginger (Sheng Jiang), 2 jujubes (Da Zao), 2 walnuts (He Tao)

🔶 Method:

1. Boil the fermented soybean, ginger, jujube, and walnut in water for 10 minutes

2. Then add the scallion white and boil for another 5 minutes

The scallion white, is the bulbous part near the root of the scallion, which is the main medicinal part of the scallion, adept at inducing sweating and releasing the exterior, benefiting the lungs and warming the yang. Its main characteristic is “to open”, which can relieve nasal congestion and also promote the flow of yang qi, thus alleviating a series of symptoms caused by wind-cold colds.

The fermented soybean and ginger, assist the scallion white in inducing sweating and dispelling wind-cold. For those with external pathogenic factors and disharmony of the nutritive and defensive qi, ginger and jujube can help dispel the exterior evil by supporting the spleen and stomach, nourishing the righteous qi, which is also more conducive to driving away the evil qi; walnuts warm the lungs. The combination of these five ingredients is effective against superficial cold evils.

This soup is primarily for inducing sweating; once you start to sweat slightly, you do not need to drink more, allowing the cold evil to disperse from the surface through sweating.

If you have a mild wind-cold, using this scallion and fermented soybean soup to induce sweating, then strengthening warmth and ensuring plenty of rest, even a small cold can be resolved.

If your wind-cold cold symptoms are a bit more severe, with chills and fever, feeling very cold, accompanied by body aches, headache, neck and back pain, with thin white phlegm, runny nose, and nasal congestion, then a simple regulating formula may not be effective, and you need to use medication according to the symptoms.

You need to use warm and acrid methods to release the exterior and dispel wind-cold, driving away the wind-cold evil from the muscle surface and promoting the flow of yang qi throughout the body. This is a commonly used basic formula by Professor Zhang Jingming, for your reference:

Ingredients:9-12g Qiang Huo (Notopterygium), 6-10g Fang Feng (Siler), 6-10g Jie Sui (Mustard Seed), 3-6g Ma Huang (Ephedra), 3-6g Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum), 9-12g Man Jing Zi (Vitex), 3-6g Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig).

Note: This formula comes from Professor Xinglin Ming’s class “One Disease, One Lecture” Lecture 33

Fang Feng and Jie Sui release the exterior and dispel wind, Ma Huang induces sweating and disperses cold, Qiang Huo disperses wind-cold and alleviates pain, Chuan Xiong invigorates blood and promotes qi, dispelling wind and alleviating pain, Man Jing Zi can clear the head and stop headaches, Gui Zhi induces sweating, relaxes the muscles, and warms the meridians.

The combination of these seven herbs is quite effective against general wind-cold colds, so it’s worth a try. Xinglin Morning Report | Don't Worry About Wind-Cold, TCM Teaches You How to Adjust, Effects Are Immediate
