The unobstructed flow of the collaterals is a prerequisite for the normal circulation of Qi and blood in the body, ensuring health.
The collaterals (luo mai) are a vast network system that permeates the entire body, responsible for the circulation of Qi and blood and safeguarding the nourishment of the body. The unobstructed flow of the collaterals is essential for the normal circulation of Qi and blood, which guarantees health. However, the progressively finer and narrower structural characteristics of the collaterals make them prone to pathological conditions of stasis and obstruction.
Cardiovascular diseases are caused by atherosclerosis and thrombosis resulting from hyperlipidemia and hyperviscosity. Medical research both domestically and internationally indicates that to effectively curb the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, it is essential to maintain a reasonable diet, engage in moderate exercise, quit smoking, limit alcohol consumption, and develop good lifestyle habits, while also providing pharmacological prevention for populations at risk of hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes.
The theory of collateral diseases posits that cardiovascular diseases are caused by obstruction of the collaterals. Hyperlipidemia and hyperviscosity lead to increased blood viscosity, resulting in atherosclerosis and thrombosis, which can obstruct the collaterals. When the Qi and blood in the collaterals cannot flow smoothly, the heart and brain tissues do not receive adequate nourishment, leading to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the key to preventing cardiovascular diseases lies in the early use of collateral-opening medications to reduce blood lipids and viscosity, inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and thrombosis, thereby ensuring the unobstructed flow of Qi and blood in the collaterals and preventing the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.
Prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases should focus on three aspects: prevention, treatment, and post-treatment care.
For the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, we emphasize maintaining a good lifestyle while providing pharmacological interventions for high-risk populations to lower lipids, prevent coagulation, and maintain endothelial function, thereby cutting off the initial links in the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.
For patients who have already developed cardiovascular diseases, treatment focuses on improving blood viscosity and coagulation, enhancing endothelial function, alleviating ischemia in the heart and brain, and relieving clinical symptoms.
For patients with myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction, after thrombolysis and stenting, once the condition is stable, the focus should be on preventing recurrence.
Another very important issue is that after treatment for acute myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction, although large blood vessels are cleared, the microvessels may have already been damaged. Only by protecting the integrity of the microvessels can the heart and brain tissues achieve true blood supply, which is a current challenge that Western medicine cannot solve, while the use of TCM collateral-opening treatments can achieve ideal results.
