How Mr. Dong Jingchang Diagnoses
Speaker: Zuo Changbo
Mr. Dong Jingchang, the founder of Dong’s Unique Points, almost never takes pulses or asks questions when diagnosing patients.
What does he look at? He observes the patient’s palms and face! This method of diagnosis is very important; after observing the palms and face, he has a clear understanding and then decides on the treatment. Below is a brief introduction. First, let’s look at the palm diagnosis image:

(1) Palm Diagnosis Zones and Diagnosis
-
Lung Zone under the Index Finger
First, let’s look at the index finger. There is a unique point in Dong’s system called Zhima (Horse-Drawn Carriage Point). In the River Diagram, the four pairs correspond to metal, which relates to the lungs. Therefore, in Dong’s unique points, the Zhima point is associated with the lungs. The circular area below the index finger is the lung zone.
-
Heart Zone under the Middle Finger
The middle finger has a unique point called Erjiao Ming (Two Horns Bright Point). Since ‘two’ is related to fire, and fire is associated with the heart, the area below the middle finger corresponds to the heart.
-
Liver Zone under the Ring Finger
Above the ring finger, there is an acupoint called Zhisan Chong (Three Layers Point). In the River Diagram, the number three corresponds to wood, which relates to the liver, so the liver zone is located below the ring finger.
-
Kidney Zone under the Little Finger, Spleen Zone under the Thumb
The little finger is associated with kidney water, and the kidney zone is located at the little fish mound. Conversely, the earth zone, or spleen and stomach zone (earth zone), is located at the big fish mound.
It can be seen that Dong’s palm diagnosis has profound implications, and the establishment of the five organ zones in palm diagnosis is particularly meaningful. By comparing with the unique points on the thighs and calves, one can discover the secrets within.
-
Observing Anomalies in the Zones
During palm diagnosis, if one observes the skin surface of different areas and sees alternating red and white spots, it indicates that new pathogenic qi is obstructed in the meridians, indicating a qi-related condition.
If one sees raised or hidden abnormal veins on the palm surface, it indicates chronic blood injury entering the collaterals, indicating a blood-related condition. More severe cases may show abnormal changes in skin texture.
(2) Facial Diagnosis Zones and Diagnosis
When Mr. Dong Jingchang diagnoses, he not only looks at the palms but also observes the patient’s face.
-
Facial Diagnosis Zones
The facial zones are simple: the area related to the heart is on the forehead; the area related to kidney water is on the jaw; the area related to metal is on the right cheek; the left liver and right lung, related to wood, are on the left cheek; and the center corresponds to earth.
In fact, this layout is similar to that of the palms, just that water is at the little fish mound. Water can also be observed at the root of the palm, where signs of water can be seen. This water corresponds to fire, with metal and wood on the left and right, and fire and water above and below.
-
Comparison of Palm and Facial Diagnosis
The palm diagnosis follows this pattern, and the facial diagnosis does as well. After seeing a patient, Mr. Dong Jingchang compares the palm diagnosis with the facial diagnosis.
Through these two diagnostic methods, similar patterns can be discovered. For example:
If in the patient’s forehead area, some special reactions are found: the forehead appears particularly dark, the glabella is dark, or there are visible veins, this is a clue. In Dong’s unique point diagnostic model, this is related to heart fire.
Then looking at the palm area: if there are raised veins on the middle finger or the area corresponding to the middle finger on the palm, this correlation indicates that the condition is related to heart fire. This diagnostic method can serve as a reference for everyone.
