Every disease has a developmental process, and Kidney Yang Deficiency (Shen Yang Xu) is no exception.
Therefore, many patients report that despite using various medications for Kidney Yang Deficiency, they see no improvement. Why is that?
Today, we will discuss the three stages of Kidney Yang Deficiency and how to treat them symptomatically.
The first stage is simple Kidney Yang Deficiency, which is the initial stage of this condition.
The kidneys govern the body’s Yang energy, and Kidney Yang has warming and promoting functions.
Individuals with insufficient Kidney Yang may experience symptoms such as mental fatigue, sensitivity to cold, weakness and pain in the lower back and knees, clear and prolonged urination, and loose stools.
Some may also experience decreased libido and reduced function, affecting their marital life.
For this type of simple Kidney Yang Deficiency, it is sufficient to tonify Kidney Yang using the modified Jiu Gui Wan (Right Return Pill).
As Kidney Yang Deficiency progresses, it enters the intermediate stage, where both Kidney Yin (Shen Yin) and Yang are deficient.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that Yin and Yang are interdependent and interact with each other. Prolonged Yang Deficiency can lead to damage to Kidney Yin, resulting in a dual deficiency of Kidney Yin and Yang.
Individuals in this stage will exhibit symptoms of Kidney Yang Deficiency along with dry mouth and throat, irritability, heat in the palms and soles, and night sweats.
At this point, using Jiu Gui Wan is no longer effective; instead, one must use Gui Fu Di Huang Tang (Cinnamon and Atractylodes Decoction) to tonify both Yin and Yang.
If the dual deficiency of Kidney Yin and Yang is not effectively treated, it can progress further. When Yang Qi is severely depleted, there is a risk of Yang Collapse (Wang Yang).
At this stage, the entire body feels cold, stools may contain undigested food (inability to digest food), the pulse is very weak, the complexion is pale, and there may be persistent cold sweating.
At this point, using general tonifying Yang herbs will be ineffective; one must adopt the method of Hui Yang Jiu Ni (Returning Yang to Rescue) for treatment.
Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) is an excellent formula for returning Yang to rescue, which can help restore the remaining Yang Qi in the body.
