Effective Herbal Combinations for Wind-Cold and Wind-Heat Colds, Heart Palpitations, and Shortness of Breath

In TCM, the relationship between Qi and blood is inseparable. Qi is the commander of blood, and blood is the mother of Qi; Qi can promote blood and also govern it, so it is best to replenish both Qi and blood simultaneously. Huang Qi (Astragalus) tonifies Qi, while Dang Gui (Angelica) nourishes and invigorates blood, making this combination suitable for those with Qi and blood deficiency. Common symptoms of Qi and blood deficiency include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, pale lips, and dizziness or insomnia.

Preparation: Take 15 grams of Huang Qi and 30 grams of Dang Gui, decoct in water to make a tea, and drink twice a day. However, do not consume for too long; generally, use for one to two weeks. If symptoms of excess heat appear, discontinue use. Additionally, Huang Qi and Dang Gui can be used in medicinal dishes, such as in “Dang Gui Sheng Jiang Yang Rou Tang” (Angelica and Ginger Lamb Soup) where Huang Qi can be added.

Expert Tip: Those with heat syndromes or significant phlegm-dampness should avoid using Huang Qi.
