Let’s first discuss Kidney Yang Deficiency (Shen Yang Xu). The most obvious manifestation in individuals with Kidney Yang Deficiency is a general sensitivity to cold or cold hands and feet, often accompanied by symptoms such as lower back and knee soreness, frequent urination, fatigue, aversion to cold and wind, diarrhea, and swelling in the lower limbs. Additionally, Kidney Yang Deficiency can easily lead to infertility in both men and women, as well as sexual dysfunction. Here, I will teach you some simple methods to assess Kidney Yang Deficiency, which typically presents five distinct characteristics.
The first characteristic is a general sensitivity to cold, especially cold feet, which may not improve even after soaking in hot water or a full night’s sleep. Particularly, the lower abdomen feels cold and is often accompanied by chronic diarrhea with loose stools.
The second characteristic is frequent urination. Some individuals may need to use the restroom just a few minutes after drinking a glass of water, or they may frequently wake at night to urinate. Clinically, we often see postpartum patients with urinary incontinence who may leak urine after walking a bit, or even from jumping, laughing, or coughing, which can be very distressing. After a clear diagnosis, recommending the formula Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (桂附地黄丸) can yield excellent therapeutic results.
The third method of assessment is to palpate the calf muscles, particularly around the Chengshan (承山) acupoint. Individuals who regularly exercise, whether playing sports or running, tend to have well-developed calf muscles, indicating sufficient Kidney Qi. Conversely, if the calf feels loose and lacks elasticity, it is a strong indication of Kidney Qi deficiency. On a related note, some individuals have reported significant improvements in their physical condition and energy levels after practicing the health-preserving stance I introduced. Why does this stance have such beneficial effects? It actually contains a secret to strengthening the kidneys. When practicing this stance, one should feel as if they are stepping on ants, slightly lifting the heels to engage the calves, which can instantly mobilize both Kidney Qi and Stomach Qi, thus nourishing the kidneys.
The fourth method to assess Kidney Deficiency is to observe the sensations in the lower back, as the lower back is considered the residence of the kidneys. After a night’s sleep, if one feels soreness or stiffness in the lower back upon waking, or experiences gradual soreness while standing in a fixed position that alleviates with rest or a change in posture, these are signs of Kidney Yang Deficiency. The fifth and simplest method to assess Kidney Yang Deficiency is that most individuals who wear glasses can be classified as having Kidney Yang Deficiency. Why is this? Because their vision has diminished; they should be able to see three meters away but cannot, which is a manifestation of Qi deficiency. Those who wear glasses can palpate the area around the Fengchi (风池) acupoint at the back of the neck, which is often tender, indicating stagnation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) posits that the kidneys and bladder are interrelated, and regularly pressing the Tianzhu (天柱) acupoint along the bladder meridian can have beneficial effects on ocular diseases, representing a method that addresses the root cause.
There are many herbs that warm and tonify Kidney Yang, most of which are warming in nature, such as Fu Zi (附子, Aconite), Rou Gui (肉桂, Cinnamon), and Lu Rong (鹿茸, Deer Antler). Among them, the most renowned formula for warming and tonifying Kidney Yang is Gui Fu Shen Qi Wan (桂附肾气丸), also known as Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (金匮肾气丸), which is a famous prescription for treating Kidney Yang Deficiency. Individuals with Kidney Yang Deficiency can take this formula according to their symptoms and under a physician’s guidance. Gui Fu Di Huang Wan is also an excellent remedy for diabetes and hypertension, particularly when high blood pressure is caused by Kidney Yang Deficiency, where the complexion is not rosy but rather dark. I have previously introduced this in my articles for reference.
