Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) honey pills refer to spherical or quasi-spherical preparations made from herbal powders or extracts combined with suitable binders or other excipients. Honey pills are primarily made using honey as a binder. As the ancients said: “The nature of pills is that they are solid, not easily released, and gradually dissolve, hence their effects are slow but lasting.” Honey pills are often used for treating chronic diseases and for tonifying purposes due to their slow dissolution and prolonged effects.
Common honey pills can be divided into two types: large honey pills and small honey pills. The distinction is primarily based on weight, with each large honey pill weighing 0.5g (including 0.5g) or more, while small honey pills weigh less than 0.5g.
How to Properly Take TCM Honey Pills?
(1) Correctly Taking Large Honey Pills
Before taking, remove the outer shell (wax shell, plastic shell, paper shell) → Wash your hands, take out the honey pill, and divide it into pieces the size of yellow beans, rolling them into balls; or chew the honey pill directly in your mouth → Follow the instructions on the medication label, taking it with warm water or with Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome) water, ginger water, or brown sugar water.
For those with poor gastrointestinal absorption, first crush the large honey pill in an appropriate amount of water until it becomes a paste before taking it.
Note: During storage, large honey pills may develop wrinkles, cracks, mold, or insect damage due to changes in temperature and humidity or improper care. If any of these conditions occur, do not consume them.
(2) Correctly Taking Small Honey Pills
The dosage of small honey pills is usually indicated in grams (g). Before taking, carefully calculate the dosage to avoid loss or error. → Follow the instructions on the medication label, taking it with warm water or with Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome) water or ginger water.
Note: Small honey pills may crack due to high temperatures during storage or clump together due to moisture and mold. If any of these conditions occur, do not consume them.
